 In the Beginnings: Sebastião Salgado's Genesis | Time

Sebastiao Salgado is a documentary photographer who through his beautiful technique was able to capture the humanity and beauty in different parts of the world. As you can see with his images of animals, he also had a very good sense of timing and knew when the moment was right for a picture. All of his images are very impactful and tell a story of many layers, many of which are sad poems. His work has incredible tonalities and detail. The photo above is probably my favorite. It almost looks like a charcoal drawing. The similarities between the photos above and below have an uneasy feel.

To me, his work investigates the nature of life in different forms. His work also raises awareness about the conditions some people live in to this day despite the wealth our species has. You can tell Salgado seeks to find these places and people to illustrate the deepest parts of being human.

Salgado was able to capture the natural worlds beauty as well. His beautiful technique really shines through in these photos with details in every corner. His work is not only disturbing and unsettling, but also inspiring, motivating us to treat life justly.

Man Ray

  Man Ray's photography differs greatly from last weeks blog on Lee Friedlander. Instead of trying to make the photos as busy as possible to create a more interesting composition, Ray keeps his focus of the image pretty clear and leaves a lot of negative space in the background. By doing this, the viewer focuses on the main subject instead of being distracted by other components. This blank space also allows room for the viewers' imagination instead of hints to the story behind the photo being left to be observed.  Man Ray also participated in photogram photography. Ray uses everyday objects and manipulates them in a way that resembles a scene or story, but nothing is clear enough to make out. In these, some of the outlines of the objects are not sharp, and these combined has almost a dreaminess effect. Another example of this surrealism feel is in the picture below. Robert Rauschenberg

    Robert Rauschenberg is not particularly recognized for his cyanotypes, but that does not mean they are less than incredible. In all of this cyanotype work, the images created are very dynamic. All of his work I have found contains the human body in some way. With these, he manipulates the space around them in ways that leave room for interpretation while making connections between the human body and other elements like plants. My favorite of Rauschenberg's cyanotypes are the ones above and below. I think these are very interesting while also being technically challenging in a way. In order to create images like this, you must have a deep understanding of how the process works and know exactly how to manipulate light. They are definitely inspiring to me and shows what is possible with cyanotype.  Many of Rauschenberg's works all contain a very whimsical sense to them, but also seem to be very serious at the same time. Duane Michals

  Duane Michales is a very skilled photographer who seems to focus on very heavy subjects. A lot of his photos are parts of a series of photos that tell a narrative. These photos have a very surreal feel to them, they almost seem like they are edited in some way, and I do believe he did this in the darkroom or by understanding his compositions very well even before taking the photos. He tended to capture people in calm situations which creates a feel of loneliness and isolation. By using props, such as the mirror in the series above, he was able to create beautiful and unique pieces and add to the layers of his photos. By using double exposures, Michales is able to add depth and meaning to his photos. Like the example below, Michales created an image that hols much more meaning than if the overlapped images were to be separate. Michaels understanding of the camera and composition makes this difficult technique seem easy.
